Getting There

Detroit Metropolitan Airport is 20 miles from downtown. SMART public bus transportation and taxis to downtown are available at the airport.

Greyhound provides bus transport throughout the region. The bus station is at 1001 Howard Street, at the Lodge Freeway.

Amtrak (800/872-7245) trains run to Chicago and points west. The Amtrak station is at 11 W. Baltimore, at Woodward Avenue. Ann Arbor's Amtrak station is at 325 Depot Street. Greyhound provides bus service between Detroit and Ann Arbor. The trip takes an hour and costs $10.

The Detroit Department of Transportation operates bus lines throughout the city.

Tourist Sites

People Mover
Elevated rail runs through downtown, providing an excellent and inexpensive ($.50) view of the city and of Windsor, Canada, just across the river.

Hart Plaza
At the center of downtown, Hart Plaza is the site of the original settlement in Detroit. The Renaissance Center, General Motors international headquarters, sits on the Plaza, and tour boats stop here, offering cruises on the Detroit River.

Casinos
Detroit is home to a number of new casinos. See the Free Press guide to the local casinos.

University of Michigan
The streets and squares surrounding the University are filled with shops, restaurants and cafes. Take a stroll on Main Street for a taste of life in an American college town.

Museums

Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward Avenue

World-famous collection, the fifth largest in the United States.

Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village and the Automotive Hall of Fame
In Dearborn, ten miles from downtown.

Motown Historical Museum, 2648 West Grand Avenue
See 'Hitsville USA,' the studio where Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, and Diana Ross got started.

The University of Michigan has an excellent archaeological museum, the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, and a great dinosaur collection at the Exhibit Museum of Natural History.
