Rhode Island

Rhode Island, the smallest state in America, is an excellent place to discover the true spirit of the New England region. Often overlooked as a travel destination because of its size, it has a regal charm, and its cities and coastline have a rare elegance that is difficult to match. Founded during America's colonial days by Roger Williams, Rhode Island was a pioneer of religious freedom and human rights, ruling that Native Americans should be paid for their land and that slavery should be illegal. Numerous historical landmarks are found around the state. In fact, this tiny region has an amazing twenty percent of America's national historical landmarks.

The state has over 400 miles of coastline along the Narragansett Bay, which is filled with over thirty small islands. The best place to visit in the region is Newport, which has for many years been a popular resort destination. In the city, you'll find a blend of spectacular colonial architecture -- including a number of stately mansions you can tour -- rocky coastline, and an extensive boating scene. Newport's beaches can be crowded, but they're beautiful and it's worthwhile to take a cruise into the bay. The small downtown area is filled with charming lanes, historic shops and a thriving social scene during the summer months.

Providence, Rhode Island's capital, is home to many students, artists and academics who reside on its seven hills. You'll find plenty of cobbled streets, historic buildings and charming shops throughout the city. Distinct ethnic communities are found throughout Providence, with especially visible Italian, Greek and Portuguese neighborhoods adding to the city's diversity. Local universities Brown and RISD provide a healthy arts scene, and you'll find plenty of places to hear live music or view visual art around the city.
